Kyrgyzstan Road Trip: What Budget Should You Plan For?

Tips & Tricks

Tips from the team:

  • Book your flight early: The earlier you book and the more flexible you are with your dates, the better the fare.
  • Don’t overlook damage cover: Kyrgyzstan’s roads can be demanding, so it’s best to make sure you’re well covered.
  • Keep some cash for remote areas: Many guesthouses and authentic yurts can’t be booked online.
  • Compare the full cost, not just the price: Organising everything yourself often works out at a similar cost to an all-inclusive package, without counting the time spent researching.
  • Travel in a group of three or four: With Kyrgyzstan Nomads, groups of three or more get a discount per car.

Kyrgyzstan Road Trip: How Much Should You Budget?

One of the first questions that comes up when planning a road trip in Kyrgyzstan is how much you should really budget. At Kyrgyzstan Nomads, we get asked this a lot, and for good reason. Kyrgyzstan is neither a budget destination nor an expensive one. The cost depends mainly on how you choose to travel. In this article, we break down every expense, from flights to fuel, and compare renting a car and arranging your own accommodation with Kyrgyzstan Nomads’ all-inclusive package.

Flights to Kyrgyzstan

There are no direct flights from France, Belgium or Switzerland. You’ll need to make one stop, usually in Istanbul, bringing the total travel time to around 9 hours. A return ticket from Paris or Brussels costs an average of €600 per person, depending on the season and how far in advance you book. The earlier you book and the more flexible you are with your dates, the better the price.

Getting around: fuel and 4×4 rental

Once you arrive in Bishkek, transport is the next major expense. Petrol costs around €0.80 per litre in Kyrgyzstan (about 81 soms), which is cheaper than in Western Europe. For a full road trip of nearly 1,500 km, budget around €160 for fuel per vehicle.

Renting a suitable 4x4 yourself is a different story. Prices vary widely depending on the rental company, season and model, but you can quickly end up paying between €90 and €140 per day. For a ten-day trip, that comes to €900 to €1,400 per vehicle, excluding fuel and damage insurance. We strongly recommend taking out that insurance, by the way, as the roads in Kyrgyzstan can be particularly demanding.

Food and Drink: Everyday Expenses

When it comes to food, Kyrgyzstan remains very affordable. A meal at a simple restaurant costs around €5 to €7 on average, while a meal for two at a slightly more upscale place will set you back €20 to €25. A bottle of water costs just a few cents, and a 50 cl local beer costs around €1.20. Budget between €15 and €25 per person per day for food and drinks, depending on how often you eat out or shop at the market.

Accommodation: from guesthouses to yurts

The price range is just as broad here. A simple guesthouse or homestay usually costs between €15 and €25 per night, while a mid-range hotel costs around €40 to €50. Staying in a yurt camp, such as those around Song-Kul Lake, falls within a similar price range. The tricky part is that many of these places, especially authentic guesthouses and rural camps, aren't listed on the usual booking platforms. You'll need to arrange them through local networks (the famous CBT, or community-based tourism) or directly once you're there, which takes time and at least a basic knowledge of Russian or Kyrgyz.

Planning it yourself vs. the Kyrgyzstan Nomads package

So how does all this compare with the Kyrgyzstan Nomads package? Our 10-day road trip in Kyrgyzstan starts at €1,095 per person (flights not included), based on two people sharing a vehicle. The price includes:

  • a fully equipped automatic Subaru Forester 4x4;
  • 9 nights in a mix of hotels, guesthouses and yurt camps, always in a private room, with breakfast included;
  • 5 dinners and 1 lunch planned along the way;
  • a detailed roadbook and an app with an interactive map;
  • support before and during your trip.

If you organise the same road trip yourself, with a rented 4x4 (€900 to €1,400, split between two people), fuel (€160, also split between two), 9 nights (quickly adding up to €200 to €350 per person) and meals (€135 to €225 for the entire trip), you soon reach a similar total. The difference is therefore less about the price and more about convenience: with Kyrgyzstan Nomads, you don’t have to find or book any accommodation yourself, plan your own route or worry about whether everything is organised. Every night, even in the most remote yurt camps, is already arranged for you.

Additional costs to budget for

Whether you travel independently or with Kyrgyzstan Nomads, some optional or additional costs may apply:

  • Activities: budget around twenty to sixty euros per activity (horse riding, eagle hunting, rafting).
  • Damage coverage: optional, per car, and highly recommended. Without it, a security deposit is required before departure.
  • Travel and cancellation insurance: optional, if you’re not already covered.
  • CO₂ compensation: optional, for anyone who wishes to contribute.
  • Russian translation of your driving licence: if your international driving permit doesn’t include a Russian-language page, a notarised translation can be arranged locally and paid for in cash.

Practical budget summary

In short, here’s roughly what to budget for a 10-day road trip in Kyrgyzstan, per person:

  • Flights: from around €600
  • Transport and fuel: €500 to €800 if you arrange everything yourself; with Kyrgyzstan Nomads, the 4x4 is included, so you only need to cover fuel (around €80 per person when sharing with one other person)
  • Accommodation and breakfast: €200 to €350 if you arrange everything yourself, or included with Kyrgyzstan Nomads
  • Food and drinks: €150 to €250
  • Optional activities: €50 to €130

When you book with Kyrgyzstan Nomads, one price covers the 4x4, accommodation, breakfasts and six meals along the way. You’ll still need to budget for your flight, fuel, other meals and extras. Groups of three or four sharing a car also get an additional discount.
