best Kyrgyzstan horse trek: activities & tips

Kyrgyzstan is one of those places that takes your breath away even before you set foot there. Imagine vast valleys, mountain peaks stretching as far as the eye can see, and skies so wide they remind you how small you are in the face of nature. It’s not called the Land of Nomads for nothing: here, life still follows the rhythm of the seasons and the wind.

For me, the best way to travel to Kyrgyzstan is on horseback. Horse riding in Kyrgyzstan is more than an activity, it’s a way of life. Following ancient trails through alpine pastures and across high mountain passes, you slowly enter the very soul of the country. A Kyrgyzstan horse trek brings you closer to nature, to nomadic culture, and to a slower, more meaningful way of traveling.

But that’s just the beginning of your Kyrgyzstan trip. From multi-day horse trekking in Kyrgyzstan to high-altitude lakes and vibrant cities, the country offers an incredible diversity of experiences.

Following in the footsteps of the nomads in Kyrgyzstan

Horses are at the very heart of Kyrgyz culture. For centuries, they have been much more than simple companions: they represent freedom, resilience, and survival in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan. Even today, nomadic families move with their herds across vast alpine pastures, and many children learn horse riding in Kyrgyzstan almost before they can walk.

In the distance, white yurts stand proudly in the middle of wide-open plains, always surrounded by a few horses grazing peacefully, a scene that perfectly captures the soul of Kyrgyzstan tourism.

Taking part in a horse riding experience in Kyrgyzstan is far from a typical tourist activity. Not only because horseback travel is one of the country’s most iconic traditions, but because it immerses you directly in a way of life that is still deeply rooted in everyday reality. Whether your Kyrgyzstan horse trek leads you across flower-filled meadows or over steep mountain passes, every ride brings you a little closer to the nomadic spirit that defines this land.

The treks of song kul lake

If there’s one must-do experience in Kyrgyzstan, it’s a horseback trek to Song Kul Lake. Situated at nearly 3,000 meters above sea level, this turquoise alpine lake is one of the highlights of Kyrgyzstan tourism. It’s surrounded by vast summer pastures where shepherd families still live in traditional yurts.

During a Kyrgyzstan horse trek, you’ll spend the night under an endless star-filled sky, share a simple meal of fresh bread and kumis (fermented mare’s milk), and wake up to a golden sunrise reflecting over the calm waters of Song Kul Lake. An experience that perfectly captures the spirit of horse trekking in Kyrgyzstan and the country’s nomadic heritage.
